Scarborough Open - Mixed Pairs
South Cliff Bowling Club Scarborough
Following a heavy downpour on Tuesday evening the 52 players were anticipating a heavier than usual green. The number of ends had been reduced from 21 to 18 or 2 hours whichever came first. There were 22 matches scheduled to decide the make up of the semi-finals.
The 10 preliminary matches featured 7 club members, 4 of them - Peter B, Wendy S, Heather B & Tom Robinson faced each other. Peter & Tom had played 3 matches on Tuesday in reaching the semi-final of the Men’s Pairs and would face another three today to reach the same point. Heather & Tom ran out 21-15 winners, moving to the Round of 16. Unfortunately, Paul B & Pauline T were beaten 17-12. The remaining club member, in the preliminary matches, Edwin S partnered by Pat Lawry, were 16-15 down, on end 17 they were 3 up but their opponent knocked the jack out of the rink effectively producing a dead end. After 18 ends Edwin and partner had forced an extra end which they unfortunately lost.
The remaining two club players - Pauline V (partnering Sean K of West Park) & Arthur R (partnering Jennie H of Ayton) won their respective matches in the Round of 16.
Tom & Heather faced strong opposition in their Round of 16 match but they prevailed 16-12. Tom would be facing his second day of three matches and the club had four players in the Quarter Finals - one pair in the Quarter Finals and two players partnering others.
Unfortunately despite given of their best none progressed to the semi-finals. These will be held at South Cliff on Friday and will feature:
S Harrison/J Blythman of Sleights play H Standring/G Corcoran of Thornton Le Dale. In the other match, A & N Cleveley of Driffield Rec playJ & C Gibbons of Thornton Le Dale.
Once again many thanks to everyone who helped out on the day. We now have a much deserved rest ahead of Friday’s semis.
