Scarborough Open - Semi Finals Day
South Cliff Bowling Club Scarborough
We arrived at Friday without any time lost due to bad weather. After a minute’s silence in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, the long day started at 9:30. There were 8 matches but scheduling these had been something of a challenge given that some players were in up to 3 matches. The Club had a team in the men’s Pairs, one player in the singles and representation in two teams in the mixed triples.
In the Men’s Pairs, Peter B & Tom R faced a strong Sleights Pair. After 5 ends they trailed by 0-7. However after 10 ends they had clawed their way back and were drawing 8-8 Peter & Tom began to pull away to lead 16-11 with six ends to play. Sleights began a comeback to be 2 shots down with 2 to play. Fortunately South Cliff prevailed winning by 18-16 to secure a place in the final where they will play a Filey pair who defeated a pair from Scalby 22-21 despite being 3-13 down after 10 ends.
In the Mixed Pairs The Cleveley’s from Driffield Rec played the Gibbons from Thornton Le Dale. This tie ebbed and flowed but in the end the Gibbons prevailed winning the last end by 1 to make the final score 21-20. In the other match which was equally ad enthralling another Thornton Le Dale pair took on a pair from Sleights. After 10 ends Sleights were ahead by 19 shots to 2. However Strandring & Corcoran staged a remarkable comeback to be tied at 21 apiece at the end of 21 ends. In the extra end the Sleights pair of Harrison & Blythman picked up the required 1 shot reach the final.
Moving to the Men’s Singles, South Cliff’s Paul B prevailed by 21 shots to 4 over opponent Chris G by 21-4. In the other match Sean K faced Nick C in a very tight match which after 21 ends saw the score sitting at 14-12 to Sean K, with 16 of these ends being decided by 1 shot. Sean moved ahead from end 22 picking up 8 shots in 4 ends
The final competition was the Mixed Triples which saw Hutton Cranswick challenge Thornton Le Dale in a very absorbing battle over 18 ends. This was a very even match with neither side able to establish a significant lead to the extent that entering the last end the scores were tied at 17-17. The final end was very eventful Thornton Le Dale were holding but Hutton Cranswick moved a wood and jack and they eventually prevailed to reach the final by 19-17 where they will play Driffield Rec’s - Av& N Cleveley & A Redfearn who defeated South Cliff’s Paul B , Pauline C and skip Keith T from Driffield in a match which finished at 7:00pm The losers won 10 of the 18 ends but unfortunately the winners victories were by significant scores their winning ends.
All in all this was a super day’s bowling thoroughly enjoyed by the spectators. Many thanks to all the competitors and members of South Cliff who have worked hard to ensure the week was enjoyable. We received some super comments for the players about the green and the hospitality.
Onto the finals at Scalby tomorrow.
