Club receives a £4000 grant
South Cliff Bowling Club Scarborough
Chairman Joyce’s application for a grant towards replacement of the Gents’ toilets has been successful. On behalf of the club she applied to The Woodsmith Foundation, an independent charity, launched in 2013 to leave a positive legacy from the Woodsmith Mine - producing polyhalite fertiliser - to the boroughs of Scarborough, Redcar and the North York Moors National Park.
Anglo American who acquired the Woodsmith Project in March 2020 pledged a four year £4m funding package to the Foundation. Going forward it will be supported by a percentage of mine revenue.
The Foundation distributes funds to local community projects, which can range from education and skills training to improving local facilities or environmental initiatives and community asset projects. We are delighted to have been awarded the grant which will enhance our facilities - replacing the ancient toilets which will not only be used by the league bowlers but also by social members, friends and members of the local community who attend our monthly Sunday lunches and other social events.
The Club which faced closure six years ago is thriving with over 60 members and in addition to entering five teams in Leagues, has social bowling on Wednesdays & Saturdays during the season, holds close season events - craft fairs and socials - open to the public; the local running club uses the club as the base for its runs on Mondays, and we have an active gardening group. The Club has been designated an Asset of Community Value for a further five years. If you require any further information see our website - southcliffbowlingclub.co.uk for contact details.
